Do You Feel that Your Boss is Discriminating Against You?

Many times people feel that their boss is always singling them out for mistreatment by assigning more work than their peers, or they given the worst assignments. Still others have been terminated from their positions, and they believe that their termination was due to discrimination.

While it may be absolutely true that the boss is singling you out for mistreatment, more work than your peers, and that you are always given the worst assignments, it may, or may not meet the legal definition of discrimination. Although, when people believe they are singled out for mistreatment, they frequently refer to the misdeed as discrimination.

Is It Really Workplace Discrimination?

There are very specific federal laws that prohibit job discrimination. These laws are:

• Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) , which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
   
• The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) , which protects men and women who perform substantially equal work in the same establishment from sex-based wage discrimination:
   
• The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) , which protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older
   
• Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1009 (ADA) , which prohibit employment discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in the private sector, and in state and local governments
   
• Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 , which prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities who work in the federal government
   
• The Civil Rights Act of 1991 , which, among other things, provides monetary damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination

To summarize, according to federal laws prohibiting job discrimination, the "protected classes" are defined based on an individual's:

• Race
• Age
• Disability
• Sex
• Religion
• National Origin
